Photographs by Barnabas Dieudonne, Mackenson Saint Felix, Jého Abraham, and Josué Azor, which can be viewed in the current exhibition, Ayiti, Contemporary Looks, constitute a selection taken from the exhibition, Haiti: Another look, which brought together some forty shots taken by a score of young photographers participating in the workshop.

This exhibition, presented at the French Institute in March 2012, as part of the cultural program of European Week, is innovative in many ways. First, the free distribution of digital cameras to all participants shakes up the traditional state of fact. The introduction of digital technology in a country like Haiti, brought within the reach of many, tools previously reserved for the wealthy. A true revolution! Photography like video ceased to be luxurious disciplines. The democratization of the means in question enables at the outset, a re-appropriation of still images, as a movement, by young designers, who capture and transform their experiences into images.

In addition, world-renowned Maksaens Denis, Haiti’s first multimedia creator, (Venice Biennal, Havana and Dakar) was able, with the creation of the Caribbean Cultural space, from the ARCADES program, funded by the European Fund in Haiti, to train a dozen young people, who handle the computer and video camera.

The second part of Ayiti, Contemporary Looks, presents in the form of three projections of works, created collectively, and completed this year by the students of Maksaens : Mackenson Ismael, Romel Jean Pierre, Exceus Landry, Walter Vladimir, Pierre Anderson Soulouque, Charles Thomas and Jean Gillenor Juste.
